v. sad for a really dumb reason...

road_ahead just changed the userpics for two of my favourite characters (Ginny and George) and... I'm totally thrown. Like, I don't think I'll be following it any more. I'd grown used to the characters with the faces they had, and the new ones just look... wrong. Smarmy. I don't know how to describe them. Just totally not how I picture the characters at all.

Maybe if they'd had those faces from the beginning I would've got used to them, because obviously I got used to new faces for them in the first place, since neither player chose to use the faces of the actors that play the characters in the movies. But... yeah. I really, really can't get used to this. I started trying to follow a discussion I was really looking forward to, between Ginny and Molly, and really couldn't get into it at all. And then I found out George had changed and... gah. Am feeling incredibly stupid over it, but there you go.

Am quite totally bummed out over this. How ridiculous.

I do know the new George's player. She is a very good writer and a good friend, so I'm going to put my trust in her. Still, I'm wibbly about it too.

... alhough now I don't feel quite as dumb over being upset at the change, knowing I'm not the only one. I just really loved the George icons; he seemed like such a goofball a lot of the time, and it was adorable. And he was a lot closer to my mental picture of George than whichever Phelps twin plays him (Oliver? I'm such a bad fan, I should know these things). Not that there's anything at all wrong with the Phelps twins, but whoever's face was on the George icons just really fit, to me.

The only one I'd followed before this was dracolicious/boywholives, where they use the movie actor's faces. But then I never checked it regularly for updates; mostly just peeked in whenever coffeejunkii did a summary. Never had to deal with a sudden face change in the middle of everything.

::sigh:: Oh well. It's just a game. I'll keep telling myself that for the next little while :(

I didn't know if you had read cal's latest post, but she talked about something similar: http://calanthe-fics.livejournal.com/ It bugs me, too, when people change the userpics in an rpg. It happened several times in one of my favourite (and now defunct) rpgs.

Yeah. I'm not liking it either. I'd applied for George originally, but adored the George they had, and his userpics. Obviously they don't know that you can do a rename action to change a pic and keep the same keyword, because every thread is now full of the same default pic. At least they could have taken a bit of care and replaced similar expressions with the same keywords, so the threads would still look....I dunno...full of expression.

Actually, the former player left suddenly and removed all the icons. Several players who left did this, removing keywords, icons, character sheets, and other things. New players are having to redo everything, which is not normal in a recast, so that's one reason some PBs are changing, and why there are now default images for so many people. The current players there are not happy about all that either.

Yeah, as some people have already said, a lot of the the players who left recently deleted their icons and such, and a new player taking on a character might just feel that the old imagine doesn't match *their* mental image of the character. If it's jarring for you as a reader, imagine actually playing a character with a PB that didn't feel right.

As a player, I rather like seeing the changes, because it helps me know rearrange my mental image of a character who has been taken over by someone else who intends to take them in a new direction.
