Ack & a ficrec
Jul. 29th, 2006 04:45 pmYou know when you try really hard to do something, and despite your best efforts, you just can't pull it off? You know that sense of resignation when you finally admit to yourself that it's just not going to work? I hate that.
And I'm feeling it right now, as a matter of fact. So I'm currently trying to see what positive lessons I can take from my current predicament with my
hd_remix challenge fic, that I really wanted to do right, but that just hasn't gelled well at all.
It's not my exchange partner's fault, though I must admit I was somewhat intimidated when I found out who she was. But I got over the intimidation pretty quick, picked a fic, started working on it, and then gradually discovered my problem. See, she does dark and gritty. And I thought I could too, but it turns out that although I can do angst till the cows come crying home, gritty or dark just don't work for me. My gritty comes out grainy, and my dark is just obscure.
Ah well. Live and learn, I guess. And the process itself has been fun, in its own difficult way, and I've learned a bit about myself as a writer. So, on the whole, a positive thing.
It's just too bad that the result itself isn't.

On to fun things: have discovered a new (for me) site!
It's Best Mate, a Harry/Ron site. Yeah, I know, there's no Draco to be found, and oh the blasphemy. I still think it's pretty neat, and most of the fics I've read so far are quite good. Of course leave it to me to find pretty much the only genlike fic on the site and squee over it shamelessly:
Twenty Things, by Mad Martha. The first chapter is twenty things about Harry Potter, Ravenclaw, and the second is twenty things about Ron Weasley, Hufflepuff. Lovely and cute and surprising in parts, eg:
4:- That said, [Harry']s Housemates were less than impressed when such an obvious natural Quidditch player refused to try out for their team. His father doesn't understand it either, but Harry isn't about to explain to any of them that no matter how much he loves to fly, playing Quidditch is something he'd really rather not do, thanks.
12:- Ron likes to think that he understands Harry. He knows what it's like to be the odd man, the misunderstood one in the family, after all. And while he doesn't have a clue what it's like to have a famous father, he does know what it's like to be measured against another family member's achievements, since it happens to him quite a lot. He'll never be Head Boy like Bill, or as popular as Charlie, or as clever as Percy, or as sneaky as the twins. He's not even the baby of the family anymore. He understands that Harry needs to find his own way of doing things, because Ron has to do that too.
