The decision on California's Proposition 8 is being handed down today. It's not a funny situation. But this guy, whose own marriage is part of the story, is hysterical:

(The vid has nothing to do with Proposition 8, btw. It's just a PSA George Takei did a while ago, following some homophobic comments from another celebrity.)

ETA: So apparently the decision is:

  1. The Supreme Court has upheld Prop 8, upholding the ban on same sex marriages.
  2. The Supreme Court has ruled existing same sex marriages to stand as valid, roughly 18000 currently in California.
  3. The Supreme Court website has crashed.

Does anybody know more?

Dear [My Real Name],

If we don't act decisively, America's next Proposition 8 could happen in Iowa.

In the six days since Iowa lesbian and gay couples won the freedom to marry, powerful right-wing groups have been mounting a campaign to REVERSE this historic decision.

They are pushing for a constitutional ban on marriage for lesbian and gay couples in Iowa – just like California's Proposition 8.

While key Iowa leaders have been defending this decision, successfully staving off a marriage ban for now, it's critical that they hear public support as the right-wing onslaught continues – fueled by this week's marriage victory in Vermont. Send a message thanking Iowa's leaders and urging them to resist right-wing pressure.

Tell Iowa's legislative leaders to stay strong – and stop the next Prop. 8!

Iowa state leaders, led by Senate Majority Leader Mike Gronstal and House Speaker Pat Murphy, have been heroic in recent days. HRC played an instrumental role in electing and protecting fair-minded majorities in the Iowa legislature, and we are seeing the fruits of our labors: so far, these courageous lawmakers have been successful in stopping a marriage ban, which would need to be placed on the ballot by the state legislature.

But the right wing campaign isn't stopping – and if it happened in California, it can happen in Iowa. )

ETA: FYI, 'cause somebody asked me about this a while ago: I am not American. I am very involved in these issues in my own country, but I do not donate/contact political representatives/etc as the Human Rights Campaign urges me to. Had to do some serious soul-searching over the issue, but finally came to the conclusion that I could not in good conscience find the interference of certain American churches/groups into the Canadian same-sex marriage issues reprehensible if I turned around and did the same thing back. "They started it" was not a good enough excuse for me.

So I limit myself to staying informed and occasionally informing others. But I can respect the choice of those who do involve themselves in these issues in other countries, because I almost went there too ;)

...and I how in less than a week the number of States that have gay marriage has doubled :D :D :D

'K, so I was e-mailing back and forth with Enna, who asked if I could explain wtf was going on with Canadian politics right now. As this was the fourth e-mail/post/comment I'd read in the last few days wondering the same thing, I figured I'd cut & paste something I wrote on a discussion board and post it here as a general thingy for anyone who's curious.

Disclaimer: I am not a PoliSci major. I am not a political expert. If you know something about Canadian politics that is different from what's below, please let me know.

OK, so wtf is going on with our politics up here?

Short answer: your guess is as good as mine

So, re. California's Proposition 8 (and Arizona's Proposition 102 and Florida's Proposition 2).

Not many words of my own to add to the topic of gay marriage; they've pretty much all been said. It's about equality. It's about dignity and respect. It's about tolerance.

It's not about protecting society; somehow, Holland, Belgium, Canada, Norway, South Africa, and Spain (and Massachusetts & Connecticut too!) are still standing despite legalizing gay marriage. It's not about protecting children, unless you believe that by denying some folks the right to get married you'll somehow make sure kids don't grow up gay, or don't have gay parents, or won't be harmed if their (gay) parents split up. And as for it being about protecting religion, I just.. I can't even go there. Adventists Against Prop 8, California's Episcopal Bishops, and the Board of Rabbis of Southern California, among many others, said it all much better than I could.

As for protecting marriage itself?

Via [livejournal.com profile] scrtkpr:

I welcome supporters of gay rights to snap your own photo showing your wedding ring on your middle finger. Spread the word that this fight isn't over. Whether you're gay, straight, bi, white, blue or tan — show your support by letting freedom ring on your blog then go here to log it for everyone to see!

Hubby and I express our heartfelt response to any attempt to 'protect' our marriage )

Hey, you know what?

Re. Proposition 8... no. Not right now. Hurts too much to think about it. Will think about it later. Just going to concentrate on hope and happiness today.
