Oct. 6th, 2006 11:06 pmOK, so, um, yeah, you know how I got nominated in the Bonding Fics category at The Sorting Hat?
Um, I kinda came in runner-up. After Gold Tinted Spectacles, by
beren_writes.
Yeah. Coulda knocked me over with a feather. Wow.
They even gave me a graphic!

Hm... apparently not everybody can see the link above. How about this one?
This is so incredibly cool. I never win anything. Oh - except once about twelve years ago, during the Lesbian & Gay Association Art Show in Kingston, Ontario, I donated two bucks to the LGA and automatically got my name put in the basket for a draw and ended up winning second prize, which was a very nice set of Prismacolor pencils, which I felt odd about accepting because (1) Ooh, pretty!shiny! and (2) You mean I won something? and (3) I'm not actually a lesbian, and isn't this supposed to be going to the cause of gay art?
So this is even neater than that :) :) :)
Thanks, anybody out there who voted for it - and whoever it was who nominated it, too!

Bond was one of my first, too...and it really pulled me into the ship.
Mwahahahaha! Dragging unwary fans into the most ginormous ship of them all ;)

Date: 2006-10-15 01:01 am (UTC)And I've started to read Gold-Tinted Spectacles. And I mean this as no disparagement to Beren--because I admire you writers and only mean to praise--but Bond really is more my style. So nothing against GTS--I'm enjoying it--but I would have voted for Bond first. But alas, too late!! But well done!!

Date: 2006-10-09 01:56 pm (UTC)Hee - thanks!
I'm not even done the first chapter of GTS. ::scowl:: Stupid Canadian Thanksgiving, and relatives who insist on celebrating together instead of allowing me to hide in the stufy the entire weekend and read GTS ::grrr::
On the other hand, if you can't bury yourself in fic, turkey and pie are pretty nice substitutes ;)

I haven't read GTS yet,
Oh, me neither. I've only just started, but keep getting called away by RL. Relatives can be so unreasonable; they show up all the way from Calgary to spend Canadian Thanksgiving with you, and then they expect you to be around instead of hiding in the study reading fic! I mean, jeez, people, where are your priorities? Don't you know fic is always number 1?
Um, yeah, going off to drown my sorrows in pie and turkey now ;)
"Bond" review...
Date: 2006-10-07 09:48 pm (UTC)I woke up at 6:00 am this morning and found your story "Bond" through a link from the Sorting Hat Awards. I started to read it around 6:30 am, and it is now 5:30 pm. I read the entire story, including the extra scenes, straight through, taking breaks only for breakfast and lunch.
I don't know how coherently I can express my absolute undying love for your writing. I am dazed and still sitting with my laptop in my lap, appropriately enough, agonizingly sad that the story has ended. I can not think of a better way to spend a saturday (studying for my mid-term exams... nope! lol) than with such a fantastic story. My main ship is Remus/Sirius, though I occasionally dabble in Harry/Draco, and after reading your story I am wholly converted to this ship. You made me believe in the characters; you could not have written Draco and Harry's reactions more dead-on. The dialogue was extremely realistic, and there were so many witty remarks that made me literally laugh out loud.
On a side note, I absolutely adored the way you portrayed Pansy and Ron. Pansy was an actual person, and her motivations and actions really contributed to both the plot and to understanding Draco's character. And finally, a fan-fic author who gets Ron! I adore Ron, and I feel you've more than done him justice; you've portrayed him as Harry's best friend through thick and thin, and I can't tell you how much that made me believe in the story.
I have one question: towards the end, after Harry and Draco are remarried, Hermione comments after the Quidditch game that she was experiencing a sense of deja-vu, and that the scene looked familiar from the balancing spell. Was she referring to one of Harry and Draco's memories of each other, or some other character's memory-- Snape or Lucius, maybe? (I'm sorry if I missed this when it's probably blantantly obvious!)
I am so incredibly happy to have stumbled upon your writing; I hope you don't mind that I've friended you. :) I know this review is rather disjointed and doesn't make much sense, but I hope I've managed to communicate a fraction of the love I feel for your fic. <3
Thanks so much for completing such an amazing story... if there's any plans for a sequel (no pressure of course!) I want you to know you have one dedicated fan who'll be an enthusiastic reader/reviewer.
Cheers! :)

Thanks! I got to like both of them quite a bit while writing them, and had a lot of fun with it, so it's nice that people liked how I wrote them :) :)

Oh, no, it's not blatantly obvious at all, actually. The memory is from the healing circle scene, from the part where the three members of the circle who had any kind of precognitive powers (have to check this... Dumbledore, Pomfrey and Blaise) were trying to see into the future. The exact bit is (cutting and pasting):
Blurry, confusing images. Laughter that sounded like Ron's, but somehow deeper. A hallway into a nursery, a dark-skinned child sleeping in a crib. A Quidditch field, quick flash of a smile that looked like Harry's, and eyes that looked oddly familiar, sparkling with humour and affection. A Dark Mark in the sky.
So it could come from any of the three, or maybe even from somebody else in the circle who happened to have a bit of precognitive power.
I am so incredibly happy to have stumbled upon your writing; I hope you don't mind that I've friended you. :)
Hope it's OK to friend you back ;)
Your review totally made my day :)
Re: "Bond" review...
Date: 2006-10-09 11:30 pm (UTC)I read your two other fics posted on your fanfiction account, "Honestly" and "Confession is Good for the Soul." Needless to say I loved those as well! "Honestly" was absolutely hysterical-- I read both versions (because I'm that addicted to your work!) and enjoyed them both very much. I'd love to read more fics that involve accidental truth serum! :) (You wouldn't know of any, would you? *wink*)
And "Confession is Good for the Soul" is fascinating because you portray an older Harry and Draco so well... it's staggering how convincing your characterizations are. I completely believed in the story-- the dialogue, history, and entire plot was set up in such a way that it seemed natural rather than contrived, which can be hard to do with some plot devices. Your descriptions of Shetland are interesting as well... I admire that you did research for your fic. Again, I utterly adore your work. <3
Since reading "Bond" I am hungry for more Harry/Draco novel-length fics... do you know of any master rec lists I could browse? I'm very familiar with the Remus/Sirius side of fandom but I'm pretty clueless about H/D... I think I once read Aja's "Love Under Will" and I'm familiar with Maya's stuff, but that's about it. Do you have any recs for me? (Though of course it'll be hard to read anything after "Bond" because it's so incredibly fantastic and realistic!)
Again, I want you to know how much I really adore your writing... I hope to be a writer someday and it makes me so happy when I experience the kind of writing I strive to achieve.
*hugs*
Thanks again for taking the time to respond to my post. :D
Congrats again! :)

Oh I'm so glad! I had fun writing both of them. A little too much fun with Confession, actually. Think I went a little loopy with the Shetland stuff, but hey, I'm Geography Girl ;)
I'd love to read more fics that involve accidental truth serum! :) (You wouldn't know of any, would you? *wink*)
No, though I wish I did. A Thousand Beautiful Things has a couple of lovely Veritaserum scenes, one in particular between Draco and Snape that's not funny at all, but very touching and real. And I don't even like Snape most of the time.
And "Confession is Good for the Soul" is fascinating because you portray an older Harry and Draco so well...
Thanks! I was so sure I'd over-fluffed him.

::wail:: I lost my master H/D list bookmarks a few months ago. All I have are stories off the top of my head, many with no links because I saved them on my hard drive a couple years ago, and no longer know where they live.
That said, if you can find any of these, I highly recommend them. Many of these were written a really long time ago, and are not even OoP-compliant, but still very good, IMHO. And be warned, this is only a very, very small tip of the ginormous H/D iceberg, and only the ones that first come to mind off the top of my head. I know I'm missing some total gems.
Post-Hogwarts
A Thousand Beautiful Things, by Duinn Fion (lovely Veritaserum scene early on)
Practicing the Same Religion, by Duinn Fion (mpreg - yes, really - and wonderful)
The Broken Glass Series by coffeejunkii (high angst, but so beautiful)
Transfigurations, by Resonant (just a lot of fun)
The Lodger, by Mad Martha (warning: PG-rated!)
The Goodness of Their Hearts, by Taratext (Harry as a Jock!)
The Shadow of His Wings, by Mirabella (WIP, and just about the most amazing thing out there)
Harry Potter and the Inconvenient Condition, by Mirabella (vampirefic; hysterical)
Midnight in the Garden, by... actually, just about anything by Mirabella, really.
Ditto coffeejunkii and silentauror.
Hogwarts Years
Resolution, by Frances Potter
Draco in Darkness, by Plumeria
Irresistible Poison, by Rhysenn
Lettered by pir8fancier
(that one comes with a follow-up and a remix, btw, both excellent)
HBP-Compliant
Walking the Line, by SilentAuror
Better Than Revenge, by... damn it, I need to figure out who, because it's a WIP and I want to see what happens. Though it's a bit strange because the entire story is told twice, once from Draco's POV and once from Harry's. It's neat though, seeing the differences between how they each perceive the same events.
Most of them can be found on
http://archive.skyehawke.com/main.php?list=2
(just look under Authors Directory)
http://www.fictionalley.org/
or under the individual authors' livejournal accounts, or the ever-beloved fanfiction.net :)
Hope that helps!

I also sincerely enjoyed 'Confessions' - I hope you write a lot more H/D, as we seem to be losing active writers of quality, and you have a lovely way with our boys. :D
