AKA Happy Birthday Hermione :)

I must confess I was never a particular fan of hers, until I read In praise of Joanne Rowling's Hermione Granger series and realized... hey... talk about having to work twice as hard to be considered half as good :(

Anyway. Happy 31st birthday, Hermione. Long may you pontificate.

The first link is to Sting's performance on September 11, 2001. It was supposed to be a full concert online; they broadcast only one song instead and then went to black.

The second is a tribute by Tom Paxton, to the first responders who lost their lives that day.

"...so what am I?"

Kids stare at me blankly, then get it and start to snicker. "I think you're a little old to be starting at Hogwarts, Mama," says my eldest.

"Plus you've missed the train," says my youngest.

Damn. I was getting all excited. Sadly, all that's happening is I'm getting fitted for my call to the bar ;)

I did! Very, very, very gently, but for a long, long time. I was in downtown Ottawa, on the tenth floor. It was actually way cool.

  • Missed marking Harry's 31st birthday on lj. Though as I'd already seen DH, I could smile and think to myself he'd probably be having a pretty good time, what with apparently being happy enough in his life that he didn't have to worry about ever looking like this by the time he was 38.

  • It's been so cool seeing a sort of HP-burst on my flist since DH2. Even from people who didn't think that much of the movie. It seemed to rekindle a bit of a flame, and whether or not it lasts, it's been giving a lovely light for the last few weeks :)

  • So sad to have not been able to join Pottermore. I can understand those who are frustrated that JKR's still going to be making canon ("OMG why won't she just STFU?!"), but I don't really seeing it as constricting fandom. I just see it as opening up new possibilities. I'm a slasher at heart, so by necessity most of what I love politely ignores a lot of JKR's canon including the books themselves. It's just cool to me to think that maybe she'll be coming up with what I think of as slightly more official writing prompts ;)

  • Didn't join Pottermore because I'm currently involved in real writing. As in, writing for real life, for Vitally Important, Non-Frivolous, Super-Serious issues. So, no distracting myself with time-wasting, mindless, fluffy fandom. What I am doing is Too Important.

    And God help me I would so much rather be writing the world's 7,893th Harry/Draco Veela Matefic! It would, I am sure, be so much more socially useful than what I'm really doing, which is writing up two appeals for two cases where the clients are completely, totally, and inescapably guilty, and are only appealing because they are, quite frankly, bored. And because the taxpayer is picking up the bulk of the tab.

    I believe, whole-heartedly, in the civil rights of all citizens, guilty or not. I believe, whole-heartedly, in the public paying for the appeals of those who cannot pay for their own, because nobody should ever be convicted just because the system failed to protect their rights and they couldn't afford to make it self-correct. But when I'm currently wasting my time - and the court's, and the taxpayer's - to work on something that has no merit whatsoever, it's a little hard to work up the proper enthusiasm.

    And when it's a double whammy of non-viable suits, it's even harder to swallow.

    And when it keeps me away from fandom, it bloody well chokes me.

  • Torchwood Season 4. OMG. spoiler )

  • Signed up for [livejournal.com profile] hd_holidays. Crossing fingers that I get in. Also crossing fingers that my prompt goes with a plotbunny that's been camping out in my semi-subconscious for a few weeks now.

  • Dude. There should not be entries about riots going on in London, England. Not unless they have something to do with football. Damn :( :( :(

  1. I got kisses! I feel all warm and fuzzy now :D :D :D Thank you so much, [livejournal.com profile] alaana_fair and [livejournal.com profile] kittie8571. I've been so utterly absent from e-life for so long that it feels all warm and fuzzy that people remember me :) :) :)

  2. Not that it's Christmas, but upon seeing all the kiss posts I got an earworm and just couldn't get rid of it. So I decided to share it!

  3. Totally unrelated: Check it out! What a great idea!
    Camp WannaWatchaMovie:

    MCKINNEY, Texas, July 6, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Blockbuster L.L.C. is inviting parents to keep their kids entertained every day for the remainder of the summer without breaking the bank. At Blockbuster's "summer camp" – Camp WannaWatchaMovie – kids and parents don't have to worry about putting on sun screen or getting bug bites. Instead, kids can watch unlimited kids and family movies for an entire month with the new Kids Summer Pass.

    You know, I think they should also provide cheap popcorn and free coke. Maybe pizza delivery. And possibly some of those hover-chairs from Wall-E!

  4. There's been a lot of very cool fests going on lately. The first entry of [livejournal.com profile] nextgendarkfest just about blew me away, even though I don't particularly like darkfic.

    Title: My Father’s Son
    Rating: R
    Word Count: 7380
    Pairing(s): Albus Severus Potter/Scorpius Malfoy
    Warnings: self-harm, severe depression, loss/grief, torture, corpses. And more, under a highlight at the link.
    Summary: “They take tragedy so becomingly, which pleases me” (DH Lawrence)

  5. What's really cool is that last year's fest featured a fic with almost the exact same title, same pairing, and... that's where the similarity ends with a crash. Just brilliant, both of them. I really wonder who wrote this year's, though I'm guessing it's someone I already know. Last year "His Father's Son" was one of my favourites, and I eagerly awaited the reveals, thinking I'd have a shiny new author to read. Found out the author was [livejournal.com profile] rickey_a, which was great because I like her but slightly disappointing because I'd already read everything she'd ever written ;D :D :D

    Title: His Father's Son
    Author: rickey_a
    Pairing(s): Scorpius/Albus Severus, Draco/Astoria (implied)
    Summary: Scorpius Malfoy tries to find his own way in the world.
    Rating: NC-17
    Word count: ~7,200
    Warnings/Spoilers: Highlight to read.

  6. And last but not least: The SummHarry

Tidying up

annafugazzi: (Default)
Wow, I think I'll brave my basement and try to tidy up the boxes and piles of crap down there. It's sure to be easier than sifting through my various online habitats and trying to do the same. Yowch.

So, in my e-wanderings I discovered that I never re-posted last year's HP April Fool's entry on my own site. Then discovered that last year's pictures are gone from the [livejournal.com profile] hp_april_fools site. Doh! And I can't find my copy of the gift I got! Much sadface.

Anyway, I'm reposting the gift I drew, for my own peace of mind. So, nothing new under the cut link )

On a totally unrelated note, I'm not sure who thought "harder penis erections thunderous climax, thunder hard super massive penis pill" was a good Subject line for the spam I got this morning, but personally I find it quite unattractive. It sounded like, if I was a guy, it would make me run shrieking for cover, protectively covering my bits. To each his own, I guess.
annafugazzi: (Draco)
Have a great day! Get together with friends, have an obscenely ostentatious birthday luncheon, take your adorable five-year old up on a broom, bask in the adoration of your lovely wife/handsome former nemesis & current lover/pool boy - or hey, all of 'em, if you're all so inclined - and try to think of ways to keep yourself happy so that you never, ever look like this )

Happy Birthday!

So, [livejournal.com profile] hp_april_fools has posted its reveals!

So now I know that my own gift, "Can I Buy You a Spatula?, was done by [livejournal.com profile] good_witch. Must go thank her!

My entry, for [livejournal.com profile] wallflowergirl, was "The Silver Doe." I got the Golden Squid for Sweetest Lego Romance :)

Pairing: Harry/Ron
Rating: PG13
Warning: Silliness?
Medium: Lego and four P's: Photography, Paint, Photoshop, and Plasticine.
Artist's Notes: This is in three parts:
Part I: Word-free :)
Part II: Canon text of The Silver Doe, in
black font
Part III: Red font appears and the Canon Silver Doe goes kinda... sideways ;)

My giftee asked for, among other things, "Harry/Ron, hand holding, water, wandless magic, and lots of kissing." I could not manage wandless magic, and getting lego to kiss and hold hands is way tougher than I imagined, but I hope you'll like it anyway :)

Warning: Image-Heavy Post )

The fest version, with smaller pictures, can be found here :)

    movie, and the mushrooms!)

I'd be curious as to whether anybody can figure out which entry this month was mine...

So, before anything else, here's a note from one of my kids:

Hi, my name is J. I am doing a project about the History of History and I have some questions for you:
  1. What comes to mind when I ask you what are the different kinds of history?
  2. What are some huge historical events that changed how we think of history? Or that changed what we think of as history?
  3. When would you say history started?

Your help is appreciated :)

  • [livejournal.com profile] hp_april_fools continues to rock. Here are some of the posts this week:

      Rating: PG-13 or R

  • Random fic rec #1:
    The Coolest Girl He Ever Knew, by [livejournal.com profile] ozmafics
    Pairing(s): Charlie Weasley/Tonks (Remus/Tonks mentioned)
    Word Count: 1800
    Rating: R
    Summary: At eleven, he thought she was annoying. At twenty-four, he told her he loved her. At twenty-five, he lost her. How Charlie Weasley remembers the love of his life.
    Warnings: Adultery. Angst. A certain amount of Remus-bashing, (understandable, given that he is a rival) canon character deaths.
    Rec: This makes me fall in love with Tonks all over again. Which is saying something, after the less than ultracool treatment she got in Deathly Hallows :(
    Excerpt: At twelve, he watched her take on a large fourth-year Slytherin in defense of a Hufflepuff firstie, and win. He liked her a bit better after that.

  • Random fic rec #2:
    Marginal Notes, by [livejournal.com profile] blamebrampton
    Rating: G
    Word Count: about 9500
    Pairing(s): Harry/Draco
    Summary: When you’re 18, and nothing is as it was meant to be, sometimes it can be hard to let the right people know what you are thinking.
    A/N: Dear [livejournal.com profile] ladydeth12, thank you for always being so interesting and so encouraging to everyone on your flist and in fandom generally. I was aiming for an epic tale of love and passion that met all of your prompts, but with months of overwork that left me writing while travelling, it turned into a little comedic confection that had met your prompts in a dark alley and could vaguely remember what they looked like. I hope it will entertain you anyway. Thanks again for all your support!
    Rec: Author Note = why I love all of [livejournal.com profile] blamebrampton's writing :)
    Excerpts:
    ‘Off you go. If it turns out Justin is pining for a woman’s touch, you are to tell him about my loveliness and virtue.’

    ‘I will construct a plausible work of fiction on those very qualities.’

    ~~~
    ‘Death Eater,’ one of them muttered.
    Failed Death Eater,’ Draco corrected. ‘Bigotry is no excuse for inaccuracy.’
    ‘You tried to kill Harry!’ another snarled.
    Draco was affronted. ‘I most certainly did not. The Dark Lord would have Crucio-ed me if I’d tried. As has been well established, I am an absolute failure at killing. Again, you are very misinformed. Do they teach young people nothing these days?’
annafugazzi: (Wink)
I realized then that you were... unique."
Still into Criminal Minds (see quote above). Slowly making my way through Season 6. Though I think you're supposed to watch these things slowly, otherwise you start to get a little grossed out by all the gore. Urgh.
So, yeah, I post again after almost two months of nothing, and then... bugger right off again :/
Anyway, I meant to put up a list of ficrecs, because I haven't read or recced anything in lo these many moons, but then ended up with a list of piclinks and vidlinks. How'd that happen?
  • April Fools fest just posted my own gift!! Eeeee!!! And it's so cute!
    Can I buy you a spatula?
    Medium: marker and colored pencil
    Pairings/Characters: Ron/Luna, Fred, George
    Rating: PG
    Warnings/Kinks: None
    Summary: Fred and George prank Ron at a Very Important Moment, but Luna surprises them.
    I got a little cartoon; twelve frames for the price of one! With totally IC characters all around :D :D :D
    ♥♥♥♥♥♥
  • Another three I really liked:
  • Ooh Shiny!
    Medium: pencil, ink, digital coloring
    Pairings/Characters: Draco/Hermione
    Rating: PG-13
    Warnings/Kinks: Hair-pulling
    Summary: When Hermione was ordered by the Ministry of Magic to inventory Bellatrix’s vault and Gringotts, she never expected to run into a melancholy Draco Malfoy.
  • Connection in an Isolating Age
    Medium: scrapbooking papers, pen, photographs, photoscape.
    Pairings/Characters: Tom Riddle/ Minerva
    Rating: um. R-ish?
    Warnings/Kinks: mild nudity, implications of non or dub-con, bondage, whipping (technically...)
    Summary: A brief moment of connection is all it takes to fuel the subconscious.
  • They Call It Boogie Bogey Fever!
    Medium: ArtPad for iPad
    Pairings/Characters: Scorpius/Rose
    Rating: PG for innuendo
    Warnings/Kinks: Super-sized Scorpius (aka WOW he's got a huge head)
    Summary: Muggle pop-culture has infected Scorpius; Rose is not amused.
  • In non-fandom related world: You know the "It Gets Better" campaign? Here's a vid by Rebecca Drysdale. Not Kid Safe, but aimed at kids who already know all those words anyway ;)
  • And another hilarious music video, from the Oregon State Legislature. No, seriously.
annafugazzi: (Twins)
::trapdoor creaking open::
::dusty creature emerging from below, eyes squinting in the harsh light::
::cough cough::
"Internets? Is that yooou?"
So, yeah, no idea how it got to be two months since my last update. Or, rather, I have a very good idea: I've been writing like a fiend, but only for legal reasons. Like, the watersports treatise I recently wrote? No fun at all, and not just because I'm allergic to anything remotely non-vanilla; it's because writing or reading about the medical/legal usefulness of urine samples is duller than watching paint dry.
Anyway.
  • So, April 1. No, I'm not dusting off this lj just to post on it and say "Hey, I'm back!" only to disappear again tomorrow as an April Fool's joke. I'm posting because there's a fest I'm actually involved in this year, and it starts posting today. It's the April Fools Fest, dedicated to encouraging writers and artists to make fools of themselves by creating outside their comfort zones. My last year's effort was this, and trust me, this one's is far sillier um… foolisher ;)
    Note: This link goes to nowhere right now. It will point to the first fest post when it goes up.
  • Also, as it's George and Fred Weasley's birthday (George turning thirty-three and Fred... um, not), I'm reposting a link to April Fool's, a George Weasley-centric ficlet that I wrote a while back, and then took down, and then reposted. No, I'm not an emo-laden writer who gets all kerfuffled and does a Goodbye Cruel Internets and takes down all her fics when reader response is not what she wanted; I just play one on TV ;) *
    And here's another ficlet, same theme, different feel, not by me: Lest We Forget, by Farmgirl
    Summary: You're never too old for a heart-to-heart talk with your mum.
  • Oh, and!
    And and and!
    So excited about this year's H/D Remix! Have not read most of the fics, but the buzz I saw going around says they're totally fantastic. Must track some down. Help, anyone? I've tabbed a few of the ones most buzzed about, but in case there's anything anyone's thinking must not be missed, could you link me to it? Please? ::bats eyes winningly::
  • The new trailer for Deathly Hallows Part II: does anyone know where there might be screencaps of it? Does anyone have a link to the trailer itself?
  • Lastly: any Criminal Minds fans on my flist? Does anyone know where one can go to find good Criminal Minds fanfic? Slash or het, doesn't matter, I'm just rather leery of going back to the Pit Of Voles. Last time I searched… let's just say it wasn't pretty 80
* Um, in case anyone thought I was serious: taking down the ficlet had nothing whatsoever to do with response. I had just written it as part of a larger story, then decided the larger story would never be finished so I posted it as a stand-alone, then suddenly got inspired to finish the larger story it was part of, took the ficlet down because it was supposed to be part of a larger whole... only to realize, much later, that the ficlet didn't really fit any more. Response was fine; I'm just a twit.
