(First scene in a fic: Anthony Goldstein joins Ron and Harry at a pub, the day before Auror training begins)

"Oh, you know," Harry shrugged. "There… there was a lot going on."

"Yeah, no kidding," Anthony chuckled. "Still, it's a new day tomorrow, eh?"

"Absolutely," Harry raised his butterbeer and knocked it against Anthony's. "How's your surname?"

"Pretty boring

::blink blink:: How's your surname? What an odd thing to ask. Odd way to ask it, too. ::continue reading, vague thoughts in the background:: Sure, Harry doesn't seem to know a lot about his non-Gryffindor classmates in the books, but surely by the time he's an adult and entering the work world he would either learn their names, or at least not be clued out enough to reveal his ignorance that baldly.

Besides, "Pretty boring?" Goldstein's not the most exotic name ever, but I wouldn't call it boring. Odd response.

Weird. The rest of the scene seems to make sense. What was the point of the surname question? It's like they've all forgotten it.

Hang on.

::re-read::
