  • Not In the Hands of Boys, Not In the Hands of Boys, Not In the Hands of Boys, by [livejournal.com profile] fourth_rose. It has updated, updated, updated. Squeee!!

  • And! Another one of my favourite WIPs, despite its hetness, updated! The Politician's Wife, by [livejournal.com profile] pir8fancier. HG/DM. Someday - they're not there yet, but oh the trip is a total, snarkalicious blast :) :) :)

  • The Boy Who Lives, by [livejournal.com profile] iamshadow
Summary: Harry comes to realise the repercussions of an important decision.
Warnings: Angst. Violence. Self-harm and attempted suicide. And unrelenting grimness. And OMG so good!

  • And speaking of [livejournal.com profile] iamshadow, her post-DH Harry/Ron Teapot-verse, which started with Miss Him, is now up to chapter 35. Yes, 35, Experimentation (NC-17 *eg*). They're 35 chapters but they're relatively short and many of them are more like standalones than chapters, so it's not much like a WiP, for those of you who don't like that kind of thing. In fact, I think the first five or so chapters weren't even planned to be part of anything longer; they just kinda started looking that way.

In any case, go read. It's quite lovely. Must admit, I squeal loudly whenever I see she's updated :) :) :)

  • OK, not just recs. I'm trying to decide between two songs for Ember to Ember, and can't quite manage it. They're Christmas-like and spiritual-like, and I like them both when my choir sings them, but the recordings I've got... meh. They're nice, but I can't listen to them without thinking My choir doesn't do that cheesy part, ugh!

    Praise His Holy Name

The Virgin Mary Had a Baby Boy

Anyway, I can't decide which one to use. If anybody wants to download them and give me a shout re. which one they prefer, I'd appreciate it.

Oh, and re their context: they're sung by Draco's grown-up choir during a Christmas concert. And no, I don't think he'd much like either one, but as he's not the director, he'd just have to roll his eyes and paste on a smile, act all enthused, and hope like hell the director doesn't ask them to clap and sway during the performance ;)

I like Praise His Holy Name better. The clapping in the other piece makes it sound like a children's song, though I have to say the image of a scowling Draco grumpily singing it makes me smile. :) So actually I'd be happy with either one! :D

Yeah, and I think it's a youth choir in the recording. The male voices don't sound mature.

::snicker:: There is that, yes ;)

I vote for Praise His Holy Name. The choir singing is great on both songs, though.
Thanks for the recs.

Yeah, they're good, aren't they? I think the Virgin Mary one is by a youth choir, too. It may even be the youth choir I was in as a teenager, though I never sang that particular song.

Thanks for the recs.
Welcome!

Oh neato! Hadn't met anybody who'd sung it besides my choir. It's fun to sing - well, for me, anyway. Can't picture Draco being all that thrilled ;)

Yeah...gospel is not exactly his style. You should see my group try to clap and sway AND sing at the same time...they're not exactly rhythmically adept.

I went back and listened to your MP3. I slow it down to about 1/2 to 2/3 that speed for a real funky, 'down and dirty' gospel sound.

LOL yeah, my choir is mostly made up of middle-aged Ontarian Aryans. And our choir director loves African-inspired music - we even have a Black History Month concert every February - but sometimes it seems like Rhythm is refusing to have anything to do with us, just on principle.

Ooh, I should try to figure out how to do that...

Sorry to be confusing, I slow my CHOIR down for a funkier sound. I heard Anton Armstrong's choir at an ACDA convention in Chicago and they sang it slower.

I don't know if you CAN slow down MP3s..

*squee* Yay for the recs! *off to read the ones I'd not heard of*

I tried to download the songs to listen to them, but my computer is being evil today and decided it doesnt want to download anything....
But, based on the names, I think Draco would rather sing Praise His Holy Name. It sounds a bit more dignified than the other. Although, it would be amusing if he was forced to sing the other. ^_^ So, either one could most likely work.

Thanks again for the recs!

Yay for fics not yet heard of!

Yeah, probably. It's also got slightly less cheese, though the piano bugs me.

Although, it would be amusing if he was forced to sing the other.
::snicker:: And be unable to subtly nudge his director to drop the song by magical means, what with being banned from using music for a few months.

Thanks for the recs. I've been reading all along and loving it, so I bookmarked the others. Except for . It was short. I read it. I flailed. I don't flail. But I did. OMG, what a concept!

As for the songs, I like The Virgin Mary best. I think either one would make Draco want to throw up. But the first one was driving me nuts by 1:00. It was the lyrics that were getting to me, not the performance. (Ok, the performance as well.) Praise His Holy Name was just too self-satisfied. (Praise song, big surprise that.) Though I'm not sure if Draco could escape the clapping and swaying with The Virgin Mary. ;-) YMMV

Yeah, I think the performance was nice, but... I dunno, overly cheesy. We didn't have the thumpa-thumpa piano thing going, either. I really wish I had my own choir's recording of the song, but I think it had a baby wailing through it and the sopranos going flat or something, so I deleted it soon after I got it. ::sigh::

I meant to say my choir didn't have the thumpa-thumpa. The choir on the recording needed a damping pedal on that thing, IMHO.

Speaking of which, I must go take a look at Best Mates.

LOL of course you do! Do you have any idea how much squeeing your chapters cause when they appear? They send a little delighted shiver of "Oooh, another shadowfic!! Go see!!" through the H/R interwebs :) :)

Yeah, they weren't very good, though. I don't remember what was wrong with them - baby wailing, people going flat, missed cue, piano too loud - but apparently they were bad enough that I deleted them off my hard drive. I do that a lot with our recordings, because all our recordings are from performances and there's almost always something that goes wrong. ::sigh:: Really wish our director would spring for a recording session or two one of these days.
