  • I can, occasionally, read (and like) stuff I normally have little interest in, like this R/H fic I found featuring cross-dressing, which normally doesn't do much for me other than make me chuckle.

    Submission, by Treacle Tart.
Summary: Ron and Harry prepare for a mission and must battle terrible fashion sense.
    Excerpt:
"Dress up? You played dress up... rather than deal with your brothers?"

"You have met Fred and George, right?"

    Right. "But dress up?"

Ron narrowed his eyes. "When I was six they had me drink a concoction that made all my hair fall out."

    "It obviously grew back-"

    "Purple. It grew back purple."

    "You fixed it."

"All my hair fell out Harry, and it all grew back purple. I had to sit in St. Mungos for three weeks while dozens of Medi-witches and wizards examined every square inch of body trying to find a cure. The first 'cure' turned all my hair green. The second got the coloring right, but it was my skin that turned red... my hair stayed green. I looked like a strawberry covered in mold. The sixth covered me in polka dots while the twelfth gave me stripes. I think you can see why I might not have minded wearing Mum's hat and shoes on occasion while playing with Ginny. I never had to worry about my health, or my sanity, or my coloring... and I always matched. I'm rather good at accessorizing."
    ---

Read it. It's hilarious. And if you're into cross-dressing, I get the feeling it might also be pretty hot. Unfortuntely my judgment on that aspect of the fic should be given the same weight as my opinion on the relative Britishness of any given fic. What with me being Canadian and all.

  • Then there's this other fic, which features a pairing that's not only a bit unusual, but involves a (former) teacher/student, which I normally have zero interest in and am actually kind of repelled by. [Never end a sentence with a preposition.][But propositions are OK.] Somehow I thought it was H/D - probably because I'm a little slow on the uptake, as H/D was not mentioned anywhere in the rec or summary. I started to clue in that there would be no H/D action around the middle of the story, as Harry remained puzzlingly and relentlessly het, but by then I'd been drawn in too far by the story itself to back out. And I'm glad I didn't.

Excerpt: Severus knew about the marks, every last one of them. Though he never trusted Draco enough to say the words, "Voldemort's a great big git and I went off him a while back and never really came back around," he cared about Draco enough to say before things went too far, "Miss Bulstrode was headed toward an Advanced Potions Degree at my recommendation. She'll be able to provide for you."

The Fields of St. Herve by Arsenic.

BTW, other than the line above, it's not actually all that funny. Just lovely and awkward and touching and sad and thoughtful and joyful all at once.

  • BTW, the OOC in the subject line refers to me being OOC, not the characters in the fics being OOC.

And the former teacher in the second story is not Snape. He's very much dead.

  • Ah yes, the advice. I wrote this in another discussion group, then realized that it was a bit of wisdom that needed to be more widely shared.

    (Cut & Paste)
OK, so, having never written a rimming scene, rimmed or been rimmed (probly TMI), I just have one wee little bit of advice, which I normally don't give but this is just too important to let it go.

Please don't forget which body part you're writing about.

I used to be too icked to read rimming, but as it's everywhere these days, I've gotten over myself wrt that particular activity. And there are some incredibly hot scenes that feature it. But. If, in the middle of a scene, the rimmee feels such love for the rimmer that their quivering, overwhelmed [body part euphemism] melts and "expresses its delight with a heartfelt, grateful sigh," I'm here to assure you that all arousal will come to a grinding and horrified halt.

    'K? Carry on!

Hi there! This is a little off topic so I hope you don't mind...
Hi there! I don't mind at all - and I hope you don't mind that I'm apparently so incompetent on lj that it took me almost a week to realize that my original reply to your comment went poof! into the ether >:(

[Please disregard comment below if you did happen to get my reply - I may have deleted it after sending, I don't know]

So from what I vaguely recall of my reply, here I said Hey & bookmarked your fic memories.

Anyway, I was just curious as to why you don't post your fic here at Live Journal? There are so many communities that you can post to and I know you will get a huge following if you do! Seriously, your fic is that good. Plus you can reply back instantly and even go thru a discussion with people ... not to mention you can make loads of friends.
There was a bit of blushing around here, I think. And I don't know what I said about the replying instantly, but I really hope it wasn't something like, "Yeah, isn't that great!" because, um, notsomuch with the instant replying for me this week ::blush::

I am trying to get out and meet new people more, actually :) I just don't have as much time online as I'd like, and so tend to get to discussions after they're all done. Kinda like the person who shows up at a party right when most of the guests are leaving, I guess ;)

I did join a remix thingy, a co-writing community, and a bi-weekly challenge community, but they're kind of low-key so far. Fun, though.

Most of us - authors and readers - can't stand going to Fiction Alley or Fanfiction because they only allow R rating and/or had bad experiences with them.
Huh. Interesting. I've been on ff.n for a long, long time (in another fandom) and never had bad experiences with them, but then again Bond is my first attempt at anything in the vicinity of R-NC17 (which, BTW, I still can't tell apart). I've heard of other authors getting stuff yanked though. Scary stuff.

Out of curiosity, I just tried to follow your link where apparently you had discussed the difference between R and NC17, but there was just a "sorry bout that, edited my post" note. Do you still have what you had written? I'd love to read it, and I'm relatively tough to shock/offend. Also ::shifty-eyed glance around:: I'm curiously suddenly interested in the difference. Ahem.

I know they go there only if they get a rec'd or can't find it anywhere else. Which BTW I rec'd your fic on my LJ - something I rarely do (rec'd fics).
Thank you! I read your rec - left me smiling for quite a while :) :) :)

In any case, I just wanted to ask and to tell you how much I loved your fic - as if I haven't made that clear enough. *grins*
Thanks!

I'm glad I could make you smile!! My pleasure! I didn't get the first post so I'm glad you repeated everything! ... You bookmarked my memories? *blushes* Thank you. I am very honoured!

As for the replying back and forth, it's not like a messenger thingie (articulate, huh?), you can reply whenever you have time and then they do when they have time. As for communities, look at some of the ones I belong to. It's easy to join and easy to post.. If you need help, let me know. I wouldn't be pushing so hard if I didn't think that your fic really should get the attention it should! (did that make sense, cuz it didn't to me)

The point is, I know so many would love this story as much as I do. When I first started here, I had only a few friends, now I have tons! I can't believe it! Everyone is so great and they will welcome you with open arms. I'm proud to say that I got a few of my friends - ones I met here on LJ - to join in the writing bit and now they have tons of friends! Of course, I did warn them that if they snub me when they become well-known here that I'll kill them. *heh heh* (a couple of them did in the beginning. sad.)

One of the main reasons that authors can't stand the two sites (ff.net and Fiction Alley) is because those sites limit an author with their writing. We shouldn't have to hold back. The first site.. well..it's not very well respected among the fandom authors. I think they call it "The Pit". When I was there, I got bumped off several times without a warning, so I just gave up and went elsewhere. Many MANY well-known authors had that happen to them to. It pissed a LOT of people off.
The second site... well... the design of it is so confusing and so hard to move around in. It seems you always end up at Fiction Park and that is just a nightmare!

*shudders* Enough of that junk. *grins* The link for the discussion of R vs NC-17 is here:

http://roedhunt.livejournal.com/75688.html

It's funny that almost everyone says the same thing: there's a fine line between the two. *shrugs* I think there needs to be a beta person that specifically helps an author with it! *heh heh*

Anyway, I hope you decide to join & post on some of the communities ... Annie is never wrong... *cough cough*

(OK, finally getting more than 5 minutes at a time online)

As for the replying back and forth, it's not like a messenger thingie (articulate, huh?), you can reply whenever you have time and then they do when they have time.
Yeeah... I don't often have much time, though. I'd say I'm normally on for about 1-2h a day, but it's only in 5-10 minute stretches online. Enough to check my e-mail, send a few quickie replies, and read a few screens of fanfic. Not enough to keep up with online discussions, though I'm a frequent lurker at a few places ;)

I wouldn't be pushing so hard if I didn't think that your fic really should get the attention it should! (did that make sense, cuz it didn't to me)
LOL yeah, it made sense. And I'm very flattered :)

Of course, I did warn them that if they snub me when they become well-known here that I'll kill them. *heh heh* (a couple of them did in the beginning. sad.)
Doh, that sucks.

One of the main reasons that authors can't stand the two sites (ff.net and Fiction Alley) is because those sites limit an author with their writing. We shouldn't have to hold back.
Mmm... yeah, I see your point. OTOH, some people want to be sure that when they go to a site, they won't end up reading something that squicks them without meaning to. And then there's the whole Keep the kiddies safe from porn thing, which I think is valid.

The first site.. well..it's not very well respected among the fandom authors. I think they call it "The Pit".
It really is, isn't it? My previous fandom (L&O) didn't have anything against The Pit because it was so small that it wasn't like you got deluged with pages and pages and pages of crap before stumbling across one good fic. And it was also so small that ff.n was pretty much the only place you could go to find more than 2 L&O fics at a time.

HP... notsomuch. It's incredibly hypocritial of me, I know, but I don't read fic that's on ff.n. Not unless I've seen it heavily recommended.

Many MANY well-known authors had that happen to them to.
[livejournal.com profile] pir8fancier just had it happen to her, for a fic that had been onsite for 2 years. Ugh.

It seems you always end up at Fiction Park and that is just a nightmare!
LOL! I thought I was the only one!

Anyway, I hope you decide to join & post on some of the communities ... Annie is never wrong
Heh - OK, I'll give it a whirl and see where I end up :)

No you're not the one who feels the same about Fiction Alley. One of my long-time friends that I met thru yahoo is now the mod for that site. She asked me once why I didn't post there. When I told her the truth, she got offended and our friendship crumbled.

OK, I'll give it a whirl and see where I end up :)
*jumps up and down and sqeeals* YES! So cool!!!

As for my Harry icon, *beams* I drew it! I am not so proud of my writing but very proud of my artwork! You can see the full size of Harry here:

BTW, I keep forgetting to say this - that Harry icon is just about one of the cutest things I've ever seen. Aawwww...
